Behind-the-Scenes Ship Tour on May 18 - SOLD OUT

SOLD OUT

Exclusive behind-the-scenes ship tour to experience everything that you cannot see on USS Midway!

This tour is limited to 20 guests and will sell out quickly. Because the tour involves ascending/descending steep ladders within the ship, we unfortunately cannot accommodate alumni with physical disabilities for the ship tour. Please wear sneakers and appropriate clothing for physical activity.

You will get a glimpse into the lives of active duty Navy sailors on USS Portland (LPD 27) and have the opportunity to discuss life aboard an active, commissioned warship with those very same sailors. USS Portland is one of the Navy’s newest amphibious warships whose crew is tasked with deploying Marines around the globe. The tour will include an authentic Navy lunch on the mess decks with members of the crew and veterans from the Cornell Club of San Diego.

Following the completion of the ship tour and lunch, you will have the opportunity to tour the Navy’s state-of-the-art simulator training facility for surface navigation. You will have the chance to drive (aka conn) a ship in the simulator on the same system that every Surface Warfare Officer in the Navy trains on to promote safe ship driving at sea while operating around the world!

Register for the event in two steps: (1) buy tickets on this site (below), and (2) complete the registration form (found here).

Registration Details: Limited to 20 guests and will close on 24 April 2024 at 11:59 PM. Please read and complete all directions in the registration form exactly or your admission may be jeopardized.

Cost:  $40, includes amphibious ship tour, lunch on the ship’s mess decks, and tour of ship driving simulator facilities.

Time/Date: 10 AM on Saturday, 18 May 2024

Meet-Up Location:  Naval Base San Diego Wetside Running Track (near Pier 5) - an oddly shaped track when you look on map satellite view

Note: All or portions of the event may be rescheduled/altered/cancelled dependent on operational demands. If the event or portions of the event are cancelled, all or part of the cost will be refunded.

Driving Directions:  Enter through Naval Base San Diego Admiral Nimitz gate 6 (main gate) at the intersection of Harbor Drive and 32nd Street. Continue to the entry control point (with your BASE ACCESS PASS and PHOTO ID), stop at the stop sign, and wait for the guard to waive you forward. Continue to the roundabout and take the second exit to head southeast on Surface Navy Blvd (aka Ward Rd). Continue straight on Surface Navy Blvd (Ward Rd) until you reach Bainbridge St, and turn right. Park near and meet up on the oddly shaped track to your right and prepare for a great adventure with plenty of walking!

Out of town on the 19th?  Click here for Zinck's Night celebrations all over the world.

Did you know?  Theodore Zinck was an Ithaca saloon owner whose pub, the Hotel Brunswick, was a popular hangout for Cornellians in the 1890s. When he died in 1903, a series of bars in and around Collegetown adopted his name. Even though the last bar closed in the 1960s, Cornellians began commemorating the spirit of Zinck's Night by gathering on a Thursday night, once a year.  This tradition of coming together to enjoy camaraderie and refreshments has grown into a gathering for Cornellians everywhere.

Cornell University Chorus in San Diego

The Cornell University Chorus, founded in 1920, is an entirely student-run organization and has gained a reputation as one of the nation’s outstanding treble choirs. Comprising roughly fifty students drawn from every college and many academic majors, the Chorus performs a repertoire spanning eight centuries and over a dozen languages, ranging from masses and motets to spirituals, folksong, world music, jazz, and a variety of other classical and contemporary pieces. Since 2003, the Chorus has made a special point of commissioning new works from women composers, with the goal of expanding the contemporary repertoire for treble voices. In 2020, the Chorus honored its Centennial, a celebration of 100 years of treble choral music at Cornell.

The Chorus will be performing on May 30th at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, San Diego (3502 Clairemont Dr, San Diego, CA 92117). The concert will last from 7 pm until approximately 8 or 8:30 pm. Admission to the concert is free.

Please join us at a Happy Hour hosted by the Cornell Club of San Diego to thank our Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network (CAAAN) San Diego volunteers. Join us to win cool Cornell swag, network with alumni, gain tips or sign up as an ambassador if you haven't already. Please RSVP here: http://evite.me/xd2VXjc53T

  •     Free appetizers

  •     Drinks will be provided for free as outlined below

For newcomers, CAAAN reaches out to applicants to meet with them (by phone, video or in person). There is an overwhelming number of applicants this year who are interested in having a meeting with a Cornell alum and your willingness to help by spending just 30 minutes per meeting goes a long way in promoting Cornell goodwill.

Free on tap drink tickets for the Happy Hour will be provided as follows:

  • 1 ticket for knowing your Cornell University NetID/password and signing up to be a CAAAN volunteer. We can help you during the Happy Hour, as well.

  • 1 ticket for logging onto the Cornell Alumni Ambassador Network portal and assigning yourself an applicant to contact. (See instructions below). We can help through this process at the Happy Hour or if you reach out to us.

  • 1 ticket for assigning 5 or more applicants to contact. You are a superstar!

Prospective Volunteers - CAAAN (cornell.edu)

Instructions for contacting applicants:

Here’s what needs to be completed by March 1.

Please login to the CAAAN Portal and assign yourself applicants to contact.

  1. Go to the CAAAN Portal, https://engage.admissions.cornell.edu/portal/CAAAN?tab=hom, to select applicants of your choice or email the co-chairs with your assignment preferences

  2. Contact students first by email and then send a text if you don’t hear back in a few days. Here are links to the suggested wording:  Initial Email to Applicant, Follow-up Text to Applicant

  3. Meet with the applicant either in person, online or by phone. A 30 minute meeting works well as the meetings are non-evaluative and informational.  Introduce yourself and why you enjoy sharing your Cornell experience. Ask the applicant to tell you about their interest in Cornell and answer their questions. Please do NOT ask for a resume, application or other personal information. Please do NOT refer to the meeting as an “interview.”

  4. Report the date and method used to conduct the meeting via the portal.

The portal will continuously update to reveal applicants who have expressed an interest in meeting with one of us. Check back periodically and self-assign more applicants if you have time to meet.

A Celebration of Limitless Love
As You Like it
By William Shakespeare
Co-Directed by Christopher Ashley and Will Davis
Produced in association with Diversionary Theatre

Featuring a cast of trans, non-binary and Queer performers, Christopher Ashley and Will Davis’s re-imagined As You Like It is a celebration of the limitless possibilities of love and humanity.

In Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy, Rosalind and Orlando meet by chance in court and have an immediate connection. When they are both banished, fate brings them together again in the Forest of Arden. Far from the restrictions of court life, we find ourselves in a vibrant new world, where identities can be fully explored and romance can blossom in multiple forms.

“Love is merely a madness” – Rosalind

Cornell + Ivy Film Event - Journey of a Thousand Miles

  • The Carmel Valley Library Community Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In celebration of Families and Thanksgiving, join us for a Special Pre-Thanksgiving Film Screening of a deeply moving family documentary Journey of a Thousand Miles and Oscar-qualified animation Changyou’s Journey, followed by moderated Q&A with Cornell Alumna, Biotech CEO-turned documentary filmmaker Dr. Zhu Shen (Johnson School MBA ‘98), joined by our San Diego Ivy Plus friends! Zhu’s film is endorsed by Janet Yang, The Joy Luck Club Executive Producer & President of the Academy of Motion Pictures as “an ode to the bond between mother and son, told with radical vulnerability and honesty.”

Q&A Moderator with Director Zhu Shen: Alexis Dixon

Date: Tuesday November 22nd, 5:00 - 7:45 pm

Location: The Carmel Valley Library Community Room, 3919 Townsgate Dr., San Diego, CA 92130

Cost: $15 per person to cover screening cost & refreshments.

Film access: both films available online for SIX DAYS (November 22 - 27, 2022) to accommodate those unable to attend in person, and those who want to watch again with their family!

Register here to attend!

Journey of a Thousand Miles is about the six-year odyssey that Zhu and her 12-year-old son Perry took to make an animated film - Changyou’s Journey - to honor her cancer-stricken husband who was a cancer researcher himself. Zhu must learn to look inward to reconnect with her son, reclaim her own buried artistic prowess, and transform from a “Tiger Mom” to a “Zen Mom.” Early audiences loved the film and how it sparked heart-to-heart conversations with their family.

This year, the Cornell Club proudly hosts Zinck's Night at Karl Strauss 4S Ranch.  We will raise a glass at 7:30 p.m. to all our alumni worldwide.

When:  Thursday October 20 2021, 6-9 PM

Where:  Karl Strauss 4S Ranch

               10448 Reserve Dr

San Diego, CA 92127

Parking:  Plenty!

Cost: $10 which includes your first beer (basically free!)
