Join us on Saturday, November 8, as we hike the Elfin Forest Loop. The hike starts at the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, just outside of Escondido.

Bring a picnic lunch – we’ll reenergize and gather together at the midway point.

Additional details:

• Distance: 3-4 miles round trip, depending on route.

• Difficulty: Medium. Wear good hiking shoes, and a hat.

• Best for: A solid workout with scenic views. The trail features a steep, initial climb before leveling out at the top, and offers a good mix of shade and open areas. 

• Parking: A main lot and an overflow lot are available, but they fill up quickly on weekends.

• Safety: Always bring extra water. The trail can be hot and exposed, be wary of rattlesnakes like any dry hike.

• Amenities: Restrooms and drinking water are located at the trailhead staging area, and at the top picnic area.

Let’s come together for some fun, friendly games while improving our skills. Cottonwood Creek Park has eight open-play courts, meaning we don’t have reserved courts. Usually the wait time is minimal, if at all.

You’ll find the courts in the far back corner of the park on the left.

We will walk through the stables to a location immediately adjacent to the race track to watch horses during their morning exercise and training. Then, we will continue across the track to visit trainer John Sadler's barn. There will be a chance to meet horses, with plenty of opportunities for pictures. There is also the possibility of meeting trainers, race horse owners, jockeys, jockey agents, and other racing personnel.

In May 2024, a Presidential election year, Professor Sarah Federman took ten master’s students on a cross-country Amtrak trip that originated in San Diego, and ended in Washington D.C. 

The train trip allowed students to cross state divides, along with other divides such as urban/rural, red/blue, eco/fossil fuel, and incarcerated/free. 

Sarah will discuss the various conflicts they studied as well as the exciting experience students had going to new places, and engaging with strangers.

Using the train class as a launching point, she'll discuss how to find common ground and connect! 

Sarah Federman is an Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies. She is the author of two award-winning books: Transformative Negotiation: Strategies for Everyday Change and Equitable Futures, and The Last Train to Auschwitz: The French National Railways and the Journey to Accountability.

This event is hosted by the Cornell Club of San Diego in conjunction with the UPenn and Harvard Clubs of San Diego. Professor Federman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Intellectual History (Summa Cum Laude), and participated in Harvard’s Key Executive Program.

Join us for this unique opportunity to tour the San Diego Zoo Hospital with our very own veterinarian, Dr. Matt Marinkovich, DVM '14. We are able to secure a group rate ticket of $65/adult ($56/child). If you already have a zoo membership, the cost is free. 

We will gather at the front of the zoo no later than 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, at which time we will hand out the tickets. Once we enter the zoo, we will walk together to the zoo hospital at which time we will break into two groups. The first group will tour the Zoo Hospital for the first 45 minutes (1:15 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.) while the second group explores the zoo. Then, the second group will meet back at the zoo hospital at 2:00 p.m. while the first group explores the zoo. At 3:00 p.m., we will meet back at the front of the zoo to reunite as a group and continue to explore the zoo together.

As we approach the holidays, many San Diegans will go hungry. Join us for an opportunity to sort food with Feeding San Diego before the holidays. Established in 2007, Feeding San Diego provides more than 29 million meals every year to children, families, seniors, college students, military families, veterans, people facing homelessness, and other underserved populations. They distribute meals in partnership with more than 300 local charities, schools, faith communities, meal sites, and food pantries throughout the region.

• We require 1 adult volunteer per 5 volunteers aged 6-13 years.

• We require 1 adult volunteer per 10 volunteers aged 14-16 years.

When You Arrive:

• Please arrive 5 minutes early, the shift begins promptly at 9:00 AM.

• Bring a food donation! Did you know we accept non-perishable items such as dry or canned goods, at our distribution center? Please let us know if you’d like a list of our most needed items.
